      World Vegetarian Day: From Religion To Saving The Environment

      World Vegetarian Day was founded in 1977 by the North American Vegetarian Society (NAVS). The International Vegetarian Union endorsed it in 1978

      1 October is the yearly kick-off of Vegetarian Awareness Month. Vegetarian diets are becoming popular these days. There are ample benefits to eating a vegetarian diet, including lower risks for heart disease, diabetes, and various malignancies.

      From Religion To Saving Environment 

      Vegetarianism is a fundamental component of religion in many civilisations. For example, many Jain, Buddhists, and sects of Hinduism forbid the use of meat and other animal products. However, milk, honey, and occasionally unfertilised chicken eggs are acceptable substitutes.

      Religious vegetarianism is frequently found in a nonviolent, compassionate view of nature. However, many others practise vegetarianism to preserve the environment because raising and slaughtering animals for food harms the ecosystem, causes pollution, and hastens climate change.

      Concern for the condition of animals on farms where they are raised for food has led many people to practise vegetarianism. On the other side, some people switch to a vegetarian diet for its health advantages. A plant-based diet has been found to help lower the chances of heart disease, diabetes, and some types of cancer.

      Here are some activities that take place during this auspicious day.  

      1. Share The Veggie Wealth 

      Even if you are not a vegetarian, become one for a day!

      Take vegetarian food to share with your office or schoolmates. Do not want to put in any extra effort? Buy a ready-made veggie tray. Everybody loves veggie trays, even the most avid meat eaters. 

      2. Try Meatless Options 

      Try the meatless option at a restaurant! 

      Are you the type of person who skips the vegetarian section of the menu without a cursory glance? Today, take the opportunity and explore the veggie offerings and opt for a meatless meal. Who knows? Maybe it will be more delicious than that steak.

      3. Shop From Local

      Shop at a local farmer’s market! 

      Some freshest and most delicious vegetables and fruits can be found at your local farmer's market. With fall in the air, you will find a diverse offering of meatless foods to appeal to any taste or mood.

      Why We Love World Vegetarian Day?

      Different people have different reasons to love this day! However, we have listed a few of them below. 

      1.  Good For The Environment

      Going meatless spares not only animals but also conserves fossil fuels. Did you know it takes 78 kcal of fossil fuel to churn out one calorie of beef, but just one calorie of fossil fuel to produce one calorie of soybeans? That is 780% more efficient than meat production!

      2. Good For Health 

      Vegetarian diets primarily involve consuming lots of the good stuff you can not always find in meat, like fibre, folic acid, vitamins C and E, unsaturated fat, and phytochemicals. That translates into lower cholesterol, reduced heart disease risk, lower blood pressure, and promoting a healthier weight.

      3. They Are Delicious 

      Vegetarian food is delicious! 

      Vegetarian diets get a bad rap for being bland and tasteless, but that is not always true. Almost any vegetable can be turned into delicious veggie-based pancakes. Pizza (as long as it does not contain sausage) is still an option. Ice cream is always good to go. 

      Why Do We Celebrate World Vegetarian Day? 

      Everything happens for a reason so does the celebration of this day!  

      It kickstarts Vegetarian Awareness Month. It is commemorated to create awareness about the benefits of vegetarianism and its health benefits. For example, vegetarians protect animals and reduce greenhouse gases, which are the primary cause of global warming. 

      Reasons to Celebrate World Vegetarian Day

      1. Reduces the risk of diseases such as heart disease, stroke and cancer while cutting exposure to foodborne pathogens

      2. Provides a viable answer to feeding the world's hungry population more efficiently using grains and crops.

      3. Saves animals from suffering in factory-farm conditions and pain and death. 

      4. Conserves vital but limited freshwater, fertile topsoil and precious resources.

      5. Preserves the ecosystem's rainforests and other wildlife habitats.

      6. Decreases dangerous greenhouse gases that are accelerating global warming.

      7. Reduce the rising environmental damage caused by animal agriculture.

      In India, members of the Jain religion follow a form of vegetarianism that prohibits eating animal products and restricts the consumption of root vegetables like onions, potatoes, and garlic. However, you can not become a vegetarian forcefully. Instead, you can become a vegetarian by choice!
