Pregnancy is a time of immense joy and transformation. But with all the excitement comes a new set of questions, especially regarding what's safe for both you and your developing baby. One such concern: sunscreen! We all know sun protection is crucial, but can the same sunscreens we use every day be harmful during pregnancy?
Sunscreen plays a crucial role in safeguarding the skin against the sun's damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays, especially during pregnancy when hormonal changes can increase skin sensitivity and the risk of pigmentation changes like melasma, commonly referred to as the mask of pregnancy. Research suggests that up to 90% of skin cancers are preventable with consistent sun protection. However, some sunscreen ingredients might raise concerns among pregnant women. So, the question arises: What sunscreen is not safe during pregnancy?
Don't worry, new moms. This blog will answer the question, “Is sunscreen safe during pregnancy?” and explore which ingredients to avoid. Keep reading to find out!

What Sunscreen Is Not Safe During Pregnancy?
Certain sunscreens containing chemical UV filters like oxybenzone and octinoxate are often considered less safe during pregnancy due to potential concerns about their impact on maternal and fetal health. Further details are as follows :
1. Oxybenzone (Benzophenone-3)
Certain sunscreens have a chemical called oxybenzone. This substance can go into your body through the skin and has been discovered in blood, urine, and breast milk. Science experts are concerned about oxybenzone because it can resemble hormones in the body - particularly estrogen - which may interfere with the natural hormone equilibrium of one's system. Even though we don't possess clear evidence on how oxybenzone affects human pregnancies negatively, research studies done with animals show its potential link to babies having developmental issues.
In May 2019, Matta et al. 's original investigation reported active chemical sunscreen ingredients found systemically in concentrations exceeding those advised by the FDA. Moreover, the recent recalls of sunscreen contaminated with benzene have raised public concern about its safety.

2. Octinoxate (Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate)
Octinoxate is another chemical found in certain sunscreens. Similar to oxybenzone, it has the potential to penetrate our bodies through skin absorption and has been discovered in human tissues. Animal experiments indicate that octinoxate may function akin to estrogen, which could result in difficulties during pregnancy.
Due to these concerns, pregnant women should substitute sunscreens with mineral ingredients such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide for the mentioned chemical filters. These minerals rest on the skin's surface and reflect sunlight instead of getting soaked by the body.
3. Avobenzone (Butylmethoxydibenzoylmethane)
Avobenzone is a chemical sunscreen that absorbs UV radiation and transforms it into energy. When exposed to chlorinated water and sunlight, avobenzone can break down into harmful chemicals. According to published research, avobenzone can degrade into aromatic acids and aldehydes, which is potentially harmful, especially during pregnancy when the body is more sensitive to chemical exposures.
4. Homosalate (3,3,5-Trimethylcyclohexyl 2-hydroxybenzoate)
Homosalate is a chemical UV filter commonly used in sunscreens. It is an endocrine disruptor, meaning it can interfere with hormone function.
A study published in Environmental Science & Technology (2020) found that homosalate can disrupt estrogen, androgen, and progesterone activity, potentially leading to developmental and reproductive issues. Due to these concerns, the European Commission has recommended concentration limits for homosalate in cosmetics.

5. Octisaate (Ethylhexyl Salicylate)
Octisalate is used to stabilise avobenzone and enhance UVB protection. It can penetrate the skin and potentially cause allergic reactions or endocrine disruption. During pregnancy, exposure to such chemicals can be risky as they can affect both the mother and the developing fetus. Octisalate has been associated with skin allergies and irritation, which can be more pronounced during pregnancy.
Dietitian’s Recommendation
As a dietitian, I suggest applying sunscreen during pregnancy to guard your skin against UV rays. Opt for mineral-based choices that contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as these are safer for both you and your baby. Do not use sunscreens with chemicals such as oxybenzone and avobenzone. Also, wear protective clothing, seek shade, and avoid the sun during peak hours.

The Final Say
Normally, it is not harmful to use sunscreen when you are pregnant. In truth, it becomes more crucial that you shield your skin from the hazardous UV rays of the sun. You may select sunscreens made with minerals that include zinc oxide or titanium dioxide because these substances do not quickly absorb into the skin– this makes them safer for both yourself and your baby. It is good to avoid sunscreens with chemicals like oxybenzone and avobenzone. Using the right sunscreen helps protect your skin from damage and lessens the risk of skin cancer, so it's a smart and safe choice when you're expecting!
FAQs
1. What skincare should I avoid when pregnant?
Avoid products with retinoids, salicylic acid, hydroquinone, and chemical sunscreens containing oxybenzone.
2. Can I use moisturiser and sunscreen during pregnancy?
Yes, you can use moisturisers and mineral-based sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide while pregnant.
3. Why are sunscreens important during pregnancy?
Sunscreen helps to prevent skin damage, reduces the risk of skin cancer, and protects against pregnancy-related skin changes like melasma.

Hello everyone, I am from Wembley, Britain. I want to write this testimony to tell others and thank Dr. Odunga for what he has done for me. The first 12 years of my marriage I had 5 miscarriages and I was called all sorts of names by my mother-in-law and this my marriage life was very hectic and a burden of sorrow. I contacted Dr. Odunga for help and I will say that he is a very strong and honest man and he indeed helped me solve my problem. I saw his email in a testimony and I contacted him, little did I know it would be the end of all my problems. After 2 days of contact, I received a fertility herb and he told me to use it. The herb worked and my husband even loved me more and bought me expensive things. One afternoon, I went to a nearby hospital and came back home with the positive result of my pregnancy and after 9 months I gave birth to a baby boy. Ever since I contacted Dr. Odunga, my story has been different. I have 3 children at present and I am very happy in my marriage. Please, contact him at [email protected] OR Whats App him +2348167159012 to help you too
