What Is Acute Liver Damage?

Acute liver damage (ALD), also known as Acute liver failure (ALF), is a rare heterogeneous presentation of severe liver dysfunction in a patient with no prior history of liver disease.

Despite its high morbidity and mortality, its overall survival has improved due to advances in intensive care management and emergency liver transplantation. A high index of suspicion, prompt referral to a specialist liver transplantation centre, and adequate supportive care continue to be the cornerstones of adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) management.

Better understanding and knowledge of the pathophysiology of liver injury and the management of multi-organ failure will help improve outcomes in the future.

It is the development of acute liver injury with encephalopathy and impaired synthetic function (INR or International Normalised Ration of 1.5 or higher) in a patient who does not have cirrhosis or preexisting liver disease and is sick for less than 26 weeks.

Symptoms Of Acute Liver Damage

  • Nausea

Causes Of Acute Liver Damage

Acute liver damage occurs when liver cells are severely damaged and can no longer function properly. The possible causes include:

1. Overdose Of Medication

Antibiotics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and anticonvulsants are examples of medications that can cause acute liver damage.

2. Herbal Supplements

Acute liver damage has been linked to herbal drugs and supplements such as kava, ephedra, skullcap, and pennyroyal.

3. Viruses

Acute liver failure is also caused by hepatitis A, B, or E. Epstein-Barr virus, cytomegalovirus, and herpes simplex virus are all viruses that can cause acute liver damage.

4. Toxins

The poisonous wild mushroom Amanita phalloides, which is usually mistaken for one that is safe to eat, is one of the toxins that can cause acute liver failure. Another toxin that can cause acute liver damage is carbon tetrachloride. It is a chemical used in refrigerants and solvents for waxes, varnishes, and other materials.

5. Autoimmune D

It is a disease in which the immune system attacks liver cells and causes inflammation and injury. Therefore, it can cause liver damage.

6. Metabolic Disorder

Acute liver damage is caused infrequently by rare metabolic diseases such as Wilson's disease and acute fatty liver during pregnancy.

7. Cancer

Cancer that starts in or spreads to your liver can cause it to damage.

8. Heat Stroke

Acute liver damage can result from excessive physical activity in a hot environment.

How To Prevent Yourself From Acute Liver Damage?

Timely liver detox is essential to keep  the liver healthy and happy. Moreover, here are a few tips you can opt to lower the risk of acute liver damage.

1. Medication Instructions Must Be Followed

Check the package insert for the recommended dosage of acetaminophen or other medications, and do not take more. If you already have liver disease, consult your doctor to see if taking any acetaminophen is safe.

2. Drink Alcohol In Moderation

If you consume alcohol, do so in moderation. For healthy adults, this equates to one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men.

3. Avoid Risky Behaviour

If you use illegal intravenous drugs, seek help. Never share needles. Make sure the shop you choose for tattoos or body piercings is clean and safe. Do not smoke, or if you do, quiet!

4. Have A Healthy Diet

Following a healthy diet rich in certain necessary nutrients may help you to keep your liver healthy. You should consult a certified dietician for assistance.

5. Get Vaccinated

If you have a history of hepatitis or are at increased risk of hepatitis, consult with the doctor about getting the hepatitis B vaccine. The hepatitis A vaccine is also available.

6. Take Care Of Aerosol Sprays

When using an aerosol cleaner, ensure that the room is well-ventilated or wear a mask. Take similar precautions when spraying insecticides, fungicides, paint, and other hazardous chemicals. Follow the product instructions strictly.

Dietitian’s Recommendation

Acute liver damage is indeed a tough situation to reverse if you face it, trust me, apart from medications, diet will also help you.

It can give you fructose in general, sugar in particular, and other carbohydrates like rice, wheat, potato and corn and increase high biological proteins and healthy fat in the form of flaxseed oil, coconut oil, and ghee.  Moreover, intermittent fasting can be helpful.

Liver infection can include symptoms like jaundice, bowel changes, and unintentional weight loss. You may not have liver failure, but early detection is critical. Liver failure is a silent killer because symptoms may not appear until too late. You can control liver disease and live healthy lives with the right treatment and diet.

3. How do you know when your liver is healed?
