India is known for its variable climate and geography and is home to a large population. And seasonal allergies are a widespread issue in India, affecting millions every year.

These allergies are often caused by our immune system overreacting to harmless airborne substances like pollen, dust mites, or mold spores. When these allergens come into contact with our nasal passages or eyes, a cascade of events unfolds. Special immune cells called mast cells release histamine, a chemical responsible for that itchy, watery feeling. This reaction, mediated by receptors on the mast cells, leads to the classic allergy symptoms we experience.

If you are wondering how manage your allergies, then this blog will help you identify common seasonal allergies in India and their triggers, along with telltale signs. Keep reading to find out more!

What Are Seasonal Allergies?

Seasonal allergies are immune reactions incited within the body in response to specific allergens that are present in the environment during a particular season. These allergens, such as pollens from trees, grass, and plants, can lower the immune system in humans, causing mild symptoms.

The leading cause of seasonal allergies is that the immune system overreacts to harmful substances and thinks they are a threat. When people have an allergic reaction, the immune system releases histamine and other chemicals, causing allergy symptoms.

Diseases common in India include many species of flowering plants such as flowering plants (such as neem or gulmohar), non-flowering plants (such as bermudagrass), and non-flowering plants (such as ragweed).

Expert’s Advice

As a health expert, I suggest those with seasonal allergies do nasal saline irrigation.  It involves flushing your nasal passages with a saltwater solution (saline). This can help to thin mucus, remove allergens trapped in your nose, and soothe irritated tissues. You can purchase pre-made saline solution at most drugstores or prepare your own at home using distilled water, salt, and baking soda. Use a neti pot or nasal bulb syringe to gently irrigate your nasal passages.
