Diwali, the festival of love and light, was beyond exciting, and we made some beautiful memories during these festivities. But what comes after the celebrations?
During this festival of lights and prosperity, we spend time with our loved ones and gift and receive loads of sweets and snacks from friends and family. However, most of us forget to track our calories or watch our weight.
After consuming such heavy, sugary or excessively salty foods, one may feel bloated, sluggish or unhealthier. So are you confused as to what to do post-festivities? Well, no worries. We are here to help you out with detoxification.
Do’s And Don’ts Of Post-Diwali Detox
1. Fruity Fix
Fruits are high in potassium, which helps flush out toxins and eliminate excess water retention from the body. You can consume fruits like bananas, pineapple, papaya, orange, sweet lime etc. Try to eat whole fruits, which will provide all the vitamins and fibres. Do not consume juice. Drink two glasses of coconut water a day for better results.
2. Hydrate Away!
If you do not like to drink plain water, you can add some herbs like tulsi, ginger or chia seeds into it and drink. Try to drink 8-10 glasses of water during detox. This will help to flush out toxins through excretion and perspiration.
3. Get Your Heart Rate Up
During Diwali, you must have skipped the gym or physical activity. For a better detox, you should try essential cardio like running, brisk walking, jogging, yoga etc., to activate your body. Physical activity will help to make sweat and flush the toxins out.
4. Say No To Meat
Avoid meats while on detoxification as meats are heavy to digest, and you need to eat light for a few days.
5. Get Your Greens In
Green vegetables are loaded with minerals and vitamins, which are considered excellent for detox and winter seasons call out for fresh vegetables.
6. Add Grains To Your Diet
Grains like ragi, jowar, and bajra are considered light for digestion and promote detoxification due to the presence of antioxidants and vitamins. Also, these grains help keep bloating away.
7. Avoid Sugary And Processed Foods
Sugar puts more burden on the digestive system, so it is advised to keep sugar away from your system while detoxifying. This will boost the process and will help in the removal of unwanted toxins from your body.
8. Consume More Fibre
Eat more salads made of carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes and sprouts, as these will promote better digestion and detoxify the body.
9. Warm Lemon Water
Lemon helps increase the body's detoxification process. So, do not forget to drink warm lemon water daily.
10. Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties and are great for overall health. Consuming walnuts, flaxseeds and chia seeds is excellent for detoxification.
11. Ginger In Water
Ginger helps reduce bloating and gastric troubles and can be added while detoxifying as it will improve digestion, flush out excess water and reduce swelling.
12. Probiotic-Rich Diet
After festivals, numerous toxins in the body can be flushed out if you consume probiotic-rich foods. Probiotic-rich foods have good bacteria, which keep the gut healthy.
13. Eat Light And Mindfully
Include light foods during the detoxification, like oats, khichdi, oats with milk or curd, sprouts, daliya etc., which are easy to digest and promote better gut health. Focus on your food and be present with it.
14. Chug Detox Drinks
Homemade detox drinks are best for detoxification. They are made with fresh ingredients that promote digestion and speed up the removal of toxins from the body
- Lemon and ginger and tulsi detox water
- Chia seeds and cinnamon detox water
- Turmeric and ginger detox water
- Ginger and Ajwain detox water

The Final Say
Detoxification is a very crucial process. It needs to be taken care of for better recovery, health and weight management. Certain foods like meat should be avoided while more fibrous and green vegetables should be consumed. Avoid buttery/oily foods during your detox.
As discussed above, these were some dos and don’ts to following the detoxification process yourself. However, you can always consult a dietitian for a power detox plan with better, more detailed advice.
