Traditional Moong Dal Recipe 

One of the most loved khichdi is Moong Dal Khichdi it is considered the best and yummiest staple after a long and hectic day. It is made with rice and moong dal and served with curd, raita, and papad. 

This combination makes this meal refreshing. There are many variants of this khichdi as well. You can add vegetables of your choice to make them more nutritious.

For Pressure Cooking

  • Rice- ½ cup
  • Moong dal- ½  cup 
  • Ghee- 1 teaspoon
  • Turmeric- ¼ teaspoon 
  • Salt- ½  teaspoon 
  • Water- 3 ¼ Cup 

 For Traditional Moong Dal Khichdi

  • Ghee- 2 tbsp
  • Cumin- 1 tsp 
  • Bay leaf- 1 leaf 
  • Hing-  a pinch
  • Tomato- 1, medium 
  • Ginger-garlic paste- 1 tsp 
  • Turmeric- 1 tsp 
  • Chilli powder- 1 tsp 
  • Garam masala- 1 tsp 
  • Salt- 1 tsp 
  • Water- 1 cup 
  • Coriander- 2 tbsp, finely chopped

Preparation Method

1. Rinse and soak rice and moong dal for 10 mins.

2. Heat a pan and add ghee to it. Once the ghee is heated, add the soaked moong dal and rice to it. 

3. Saute them for 2 mins, till the dal starts to smell good. After which, add turmeric, salt and water. Mix it well.

4. Transfer it to a pressure cooker and cook it for 5 mins with a covered lid.

5. In another Kadai, add ghee. Once it is heated, add 1 bay leaf, cumin seed and a pinch of hing. 

6. Let the spices cook on low flame until they smell good. 

7. Add onion, ginger garlic paste, and tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.

8. Once they are mushy, turn the flame to medium and add turmeric, salt, chilli powder, and garam masala.

9. When the spices begin to smell good, sauté for 2 minutes and add the cooked dal and rice. 

10. Adjust the consistency as necessary and mix it well.

11. Cover it and boil for 5 minutes.

Serve the khichdi hot with curd and garnish with coriander.
